To clean their teeth thoroughly, many people reach for an electric toothbrush for their daily oral hygiene. Often a signal sounds after two or three minutes, so we can be sure we have spent enough time brushing. An electric toothbrush lasts longer than a manual one, which should be replaced every three months. With an electric brush, bear the following in mind:
- Clean the head thoroughly. Rinse the head under water after every brushing and remove any toothpaste residue.
- Replace the head regularly. On most models the heads are interchangeable. Replace the head every three months; some models show how worn the head is.
- Stand it upright. So that the head can dry in the air, it should stand upright in the holder. If you take the brush on holiday, it is well worth transporting it in a suitable box. That avoids damage and also prevents contact with bacteria and dirt.
- Disinfect it. Every now and then the brush should be disinfected. Any chemist sells suitable toothbrush disinfectant; alternatively an antibacterial mouthwash will do.
- Charge the battery properly. Charge it fully before first use. For a long service life, recharge only when the battery is fairly low. That not only extends the life of the brush but also improves its cleaning performance and the hygienic conditions.
