Strong teeth through a healthy diet

«Health begins in the mouth» was the motto of the 2020 Day of Dental Health. Every year on 25 September numerous events draw attention to how much healthy teeth and dental care matter.

Start prevention in childhood

Our oral health is decisively influenced by the food and drink we consume. Depending on what the diet contains, disease in the mouth develops faster. A good example is taking in too much carbohydrate in the form of sugar, which can lead to decay. A diet low in vitamins and minerals can also harm teeth and gums and make eating harder. Children and adolescents are particularly vulnerable: they like sweet things and often do not take brushing very seriously. Parents should therefore pay particular attention to what their children eat. An important basic rule for a tooth-friendly diet in childhood and adolescence: sweets and sugary drinks only in small amounts and ideally with or after the main meals. Afterwards the teeth must be brushed carefully. Incidentally, bacteria need very little sugar, and that includes fruit sugar. Many parents mix a small splash of apple juice into mineral water believing it does no harm. In fact a small amount of fruit sugar is already enough for bacteria to multiply.

Keep to your check-up appointments

Prophylaxis is a very important building block. That is why it is advisable for all our patients, small and large, to keep their check-up appointments. That way we can recognise early whether a tooth is at risk of decay and possibly still take action. We are also glad to give tips on a healthy diet and the right brushing technique.
