A woman’s hormone balance changes between the ages of about 45 and 65. Low mood, disturbed sleep and hot flushes are among the best-known symptoms. The menopause also poses a health risk for the teeth and gums.
Symptoms that occur frequently
The falling oestrogen level is mainly responsible for a great many complaints. Dental and oral health are directly affected by the hormonal fluctuations: the gums become much softer and more sensitive, bleeding gums become more likely, and swelling occurs because the bacterial population in the mouth changes. Science then speaks of hormonal gingivitis. There is a higher risk of developing decay or periodontitis.
During the menopause women produce less saliva, which is a distinct disadvantage, since saliva has an important cleaning, mineralising and protective function in the mouth. With a denture, sore spots and pain can occur. To stimulate saliva and avoid a dry mouth, women should make sure to drink water regularly and to eat fruit.
In some women, a burning sensation on the tongue or the mucous membrane accompanies the hormonal change: burning mouth syndrome. It frequently affects the tongue, the palate and also the lips. A dry mouth is often the cause here too. A balanced diet, drinking plenty, and rinses with salt water or cold sage tea can help reduce the symptoms. Vitamin D deficiency and osteoporosis are further risks that can cause teeth to lose their firm hold in the jaw.
Getting through the menopause in good health
The menopause can last ten to fifteen years on average. During this time pay particular attention to thorough oral hygiene. Please use interdental brushes or floss between the teeth as well, where the brush reaches poorly or not at all. To recognise problems in time, regular prophylaxis and a professional cleaning are advisable.
